Over 1500 suggestions on the draft nursing education curriculum which was released by the Nursing Education Regulator, Indian Nursing Council, in January. Ashwini Kumar Choubey shared the same in the Lok Sabha.

In the draft nursing education curriculum, 10+2 or equivalent students of Science, Arts and Commerce stream are eligible for B.Sc Nursing course. However, the candidate must have obtained a minimum of 45% marks in the academic/ core/ elective subjects taken together and passed English individually will be eligible for B.Sc Nursing course.

The B.Sc Nursing course is a four-full time course comprising of eight semesters which prepares a student to become registered nursing qualified to practice either in public/ government or private health care settings.

The proposal came after the Council decided in 2019 to opt for a single entry-level for Nursing to do away with General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) course. B.Sc Nursing is a four-year course whereas GNM is a diploma course. Admissions to General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) courses will be stopped from 2020. According to the reports, 3215 GNM schools are running in the country and which produces 1.2 lakh nurses every year.
