SC Appoints Governor of Telangana as Acting VC of State University till Final Decision is Taken
This decision was against the decision of the high court.
According to law, only professors with 10 years of experience can be appointed as Vice- Chancellor of a University. But the Supreme Court on Monday i.e. 29th August’ 16 allowed the governor of Telangana to be the Vice-Chancellor of a University. This decision was against the decision state government announced earlier. The honourable supreme court has allowed all the 8 newly appointed vice chancellors to continue working as VCs.

The panel that announced this decision included following Justices and the plea was filed by Telangana after the Hyderabad High Court ruled against the new VCs.

This is however not the final decision, the court has only said that the Governor can continue working as a Vice-Chancellor till the final decision is taken so the University does not suffer. The court has written to UGC i.e. University Grants Commission and other authorities to submit their suggestions. Although this decision has challenged the basic rules that one has to qualify to become a vice chancellor. Following are the rules.
- Only professors with 10 years of experience are eligible for the vice-chancellor post
- People with 'relevant administrative capabilities' are eligible to occupy the post
