Survey: Cut Down the Number of Tamil Nadu Engineering Colleges to Solve Unemployment

A survey had been conducted by a chemical engineering and technology/market research firm, Nandini Consultancy Centre Chennai. According to the survey, the number of engineering colleges available in Tamil Nadu needs to be cut down by 50 per cent as the number of unemployed engineers in the country has been increasing. The survey was conducted among the engineering students, faculty members of engineering colleges, parents of the engineering students as well as the potential employers for engineering students.

As per the survey, it was found out that more than 2.5 lakh students can take admission in 550 engineering colleges that are present in the state of Tamil Nadu alone. However, the number of students who had enrolled under the engineering courses that are available at the colleges was approximately 50% of the total number of students that could’ve taken admission last year.

Experts claim that in the coming years, the number of students taking admission in the engineering colleges is set to decrease more. Sources state that the reasons for the fewer number of admission in these colleges are highly be affected by fewer job opportunities that the fresh engineering students will receive after the completion of their programme. The survey also states that the quality of education in these colleges have also deteriorated, thus, resulting in engineers with poor knowledge of the craft.

The director of Nandini Consultancy Centre, N S Venkataraman claims that the carelessness of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) is to be blamed for high numbers of engineers who are unemployed. He adds that AICTE should have taken into consideration, the number of job opportunities available with respect to the number of students enrolling in the engineering courses.

As per Nandini Consultancy Centre and their survey, the solution the problem is to reduce the number of engineering colleges down by 50%. They added that the engineering colleges that do not work up to the required standards need to shut down. Engineering colleges that are not able to attract students to fill up even half of the number of seats that are available in the campus, should be taken into consideration. The survey also suggested that the infrastructure that has been used by these engineering colleges should be converted into infrastructure that can be used to impart education in the field of arts and science.
