With an objective to encourage Class 12 students to pursue engineering and medicine, the government of Tamil Nadu is gearing up to provide an online platform which trains students for entrance exams like Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) and National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET).

K. Pandirajan, Education Minister, revealed that state government coordinates the online platform along with Aspire K. Swaminathan who would play a significant role in providing a technological framework for the project. It is a cost efficient e-programme which will have subject related modules. The e-programme will be made available to class 12 students in various schools across the state.

The main reason behind taking this initiative is that most of the government schools lack resources and faculty to train students for the competitive exams. The government has come up with e-programme to address the issue through which students will be given coaching for JEE and NEET. The government also considered NEET syllabus which became an obstacle for students who are pursuing state syllabus. The online classes will bridge the gap between state board textbooks and NEET which is CBSE-centric.

Pandirajan clarified that he does not want to see the students of Tamil Nadu miss out an opportunity of securing admissions at medical colleges. The e-programme will be accessible to around 10,000 students who have shown high academic performance and aim to secure seats in engineering and medical colleges.

He also cleared that the government would continue to contest the Supreme Court’s decision to bring back NEET. He concluded that the initiative was only to ensure that the government school students who do not have access to coaching were not a disadvantage.
