A students’ wing called Dravida Kazhakam (DK) launched a statewide two-wheeler campaign on March 18, 2017, opposingNational Eligibility cum Entrance Testin Tamil Nadu. Jayakumar, State General Secretary of DK launched the campaign and T. Kamraj, State Joint Secretary of DK., is leading it. The campaign kick started at Sundarapuram and a total number of 25 students on ten two wheelers and a car took part in the campaign.

It seems like all the political parties in the state are opposing the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test or NEET. Most of the political leaders, parents and students feel that the introduction of NEET for the admission to medical courses will have a negative impact on rural students in the state.

The protest was organised in Chennai, Cuddalore, Coimbatore, Dharmapuri and Thenkasi. A public meeting will take place at Vriddhachalam on March 21, 2017.

The state government’s efforts to skip NEET for the coming academic sessions did not succeed. Earlier, the state government had passed legislations exempting NEET which are now under the review. The legislation passed by the state government will not come into effect unless the President of India gives the nod.

As of now, there is no clarity whether Tamil Nadu will be given exemption from NEET by the Centre or not. Last week, High Court of Madras slammed the state government for opposing NEET. The court indicated that the state government shall ideally feel shy with the fact that it does not have the confidence in the capability of students and the curriculum.
