Tamil Nadu MP Meets PM Modi Seeking Exemption from NEET 2017

Tiruchi Siva, Member of Parliament from Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 17, 2017 and requested him to intervene to get the consent of the President of India on a legislation to get exemption from the ambit of National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET), which was passed in the Assembly of Tamil Nadu.

After meeting the Prime Minister, Siva said that he has sought a permanent solution to the issue, as a large number of students in the state would be affected by conduction of NEET, which is scheduled to be held on May 7, 2017. With the NEET exam knocking at the door, Siva stressed on the urgency to arrive at a concensus as soon as possible.

The MP also submitted a letter to PM Modi on behalf of his party working president and M K Stalin, the leader of the Opposition party in the state Assembly.

Stalin stated, in his letter, that the new exam will definitely affect the interests of the students hailing from rural areas, who aspire to get into the medical profession. The country needs brilliant doctors but at the same time, rural areas also need doctors to treat patients.

The state on February 1, 2017, passed a legislation in its assembly to exempt its students from taking the examination for medical admission to dental and medical colleges. The state wants that admissions should be based on marks obtained in class 12th board examinations.

The MP further said that the proposed examination will be held on the principles of CBSE syllabus and it will only benefit the students coming from urban areas.
