The State Assembly of Tamil Nadu passed legislation on February 2, 2017, to exempt the students across the state from taking NEET for the admission to dental and medical courses. The Bill was tabled in the Assembly by Health Minister of State, C. Vijay Bhaskar on January 31, 2017. The Bill clearly stated that the admission to MBBS and BDS courses in Tamil Nadu have to be carried out as per Class 12 marks. Another Bill was also introduced in the Assembly which indicated that the admission to PG medical and dental courses would be based on qualifying marks in UG and separate entrance test for PG medical and dental courses must be cancelled.

Finally, the two bills have been passed by the State Assembly on February 2, 2017. Various other states are also opposing NEET as it causes disadvantage to the students from the rural background. Most of the states follow the syllabus prescribed by the state education boards and the syllabus of NEET is prescribed by CBSE. Therefore, it is tough for students from rural areas to get coaching and prepare a somewhat new syllabus.

One of the senior advocates in Tamil Nadu, Sudha Ramalingam appreciated the state government for taking a positive step. She further added that professional education is one among the subjects of Concurrent List and the Centre might have different views on the Tamil Nadu Admission to MBBS and BDS Bill 2017 which bypassed the central law that has the sanction of Supreme Court.
