Telangana: AIIMS to Come Up at Bhogipur

The Government of Telangana has decided to set up All India Institute of Medical Sciences at Bhogipur. Earlier, the government announced that the Nizam Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) would be converted into AIIMS. However, the decision has been rolled back, and the government has identified 1,000 acres of land on a single stretch at Bhogipur. Bhogipur is 50 km away from Hyderabad. The government has prepared a fresh proposal and forwarded it to the central government for the approval.

The Union Ministry of Health rejected the proposal made by state government to convert NIMS into AIIMS. The officials of the government mentioned that NIMS does not meet the parameters set for the establishment of the Centrally-sponsored medical institute. The state government identified 250 acres of land in addition to NIMS. However, the ministry did not accept the proposal.

The officials also mentioned that according to the AP Reorganisation Act the UPA government had promised to set up AIIMS in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
