This Wheelchair-bound IIT Aspirant wants to make it big in the Field of Science

17-year-old Tuhin Dey wants to excel in the field of science. The wheelchair-bound IIT aspirant is affected by arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC) – a disease that limits the mobility of joints.

Tuhin hails from Midnapore district, West Bengal, and is currently in Kota for the preparation of JEE in order to get admission in one of the IITs. He holds a pen with his mouth to write and uses his chin to operate gadgets.

The young aspirant is highly inspired by Stephen Hawking and wants to become a cosmologist. He has undergone over 20 surgeries but his determination for studies kept him going.

Tuhin is 90% handicap and according to the doctors, his conditions cannot be cured. Despite the difficulties, Tuhin appeared for his Class 10 exams in 2017 without any extra time and assistance of a writer.

He is a student of Kendriya Vidyalaya at IIT-Kharagpur. For his will power and determination, Tuhin was awarded the National Child Award for Exceptional Achievement in 2012 as well as the Best Creative Child Award with Disabilities in 2013. Both the awards were presented by President Pranab Mukherjee.

Since his disease does not affect the brain, Tuhin can pursue his dreams. His mother left her government job to look after him. Tuhin’s parents have moved to Kota for the next two years so that they can support their son and help him prepare for the Joint Entrance Exam. Tuhin got enrolled at Allen Career Institute and he has been awarded a 100% fee waiver.

Deenabandhu, a private trust of West Bengal, has gifted Tuhin a laptop and telescope. They are also financing a documentary film based on his life. The trust is also determined to provide financial assistance to Tuhin, if required in the future.
