On July 13, 2017, the High Court of Madras rejected to pass any interim order on a petition that sought a stay on single window counselling for the admission to engineering courses in private colleges across the state. Self-Financing Engineering Colleges Management Association of Anna University filed the petition. However, the apex court of the state clarified that it does not have the authority to interfere with the rights of the government. The court indicated that it could not entertain the plea. Justice K. Ravichandra Baabu directed the respondent authorities to file a reply on the same and adjourned the matter for hearing to next week.

The petitioner claimed that the court must allow all the private engineering colleges to fill up the seats independently instead of participating in Tamil Nadu Engineering Admission (TNEA) process. The petitioner further indicated that the state-level counselling process has lost its purpose. The petitioner also submitted a report that said TNEA process is not giving additional time to educational institutes to fill up the vacant seats. Therefore, most of the seats in private engineering colleges are remaining vacant and causing a financial burden to the institute.
