Top Faculty from IITs and NITs to Mentor AICTE-Approved Engineering Colleges
Over 200 faculty members from IITs and NITs will mentor other engineering colleges as a part of the mentorship programme introduced by AICTE. They will be working towards achieving the NBA accreditation by the end of 2022 for all the technical institutes.
Retired and serving faculty from the best engineering colleges across the country will work as mentors with engineering institutes/colleges all over the country. They will mentor those engineering colleges which are lagging in teaching techniques and curriculum.
This initiative is an effort of All India Council for Technical Education - AICTE to ensure that at least half the programmes offered by engineering colleges and institutes in the country are approved by the NBA before 2022.
As per the AICTE analysis, various engineering colleges are unable to get their programmes approved by NBA. This is because of their outdated curriculum, low-quality faculty and low emphasis on learning outcomes.

The mentorship plan will have 200 faculty members who will be appointed as margdarshaks for those technical institutions which are struggling to get accreditations due to different factors. These mentors will be selected from the top engineering institutions such as IITs and NITs of the country.
Apart from that, retired academic leaders and educationists will also be chosen for the mentorship programme provided they have the capacity and bandwidth to travel.
The mentors will be asked to choose five to ten institutions which are within 500 km radius of the nodal institution. They will also help the institutions get NBA accreditation for few of the courses offered by them.
The local hospitality arrangement and travelling expenses of the visiting faculty will be borne by the mentee institutes. The visiting professors will be paid an honorarium of up to Rs. 10,000 per visit.

Mohan Kapahy, former member of the University Grants Commission said that the quality of technical education is very diverse in India. Therefore, accreditation like the NBA is much needed. This is because there is a huge disparity between premier institutes like IITs and NITs and other technical colleges which have mushroomed across the country.
