HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar expressed his happiness that the Digital Literacy Campaign which is also known as Vittiya Saksharta Abhiyan received tremendous response from the students. The campaign was launched in early December 2016, and more than one lakh students have already enrolled their names as volunteers to promote digital literacy.

The training programme for the registered volunteers will begin this week in all the colleges. Javadekar indicated that the number of volunteers is expected to increase to 25 lakh.

The training programme will focus on process to open a bank account, linking Aadhar number to bank account number as well as mobile number and other information related to digital literacy. The training will lay emphasis on Aadhar based payment system, Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD), Unified Payments Interface (UPI), prepaid card and mobile wallet.

Javadekar further added that the campaign would be one of the biggest efforts in promoting digital financial transaction. The campaign will give a new structure to ‘Digital India’ initiative. The campaign will be launched in 500 cities initially. The government has selected those cities which have a population of more than one lakh.

Javadekar explained that the public could give their feedback on the campaign and all the recommendations and opinions will be considered.

The campaign was launched on December 12, 2016, where Javadekar advised all the heads of higher educational institutions to adopt online transactions. The campaign will continue for one month, and the trained volunteers or students will play a significant role in training at least ten families regarding digital payments.
