UGC Receives 100 Applications from Institutes Seeking HRD’s World Class Tag
- Popular institutes like Delhi University, JNU and seven IITs are in the race for the 'Institute of Eminence Tag'.
- The UGC will select 10 public and 10 private institutes for ‘Institute of Eminence’ tag and the names will be finalised by April 2018.
The University Grants Commission received 100 applications from different institutes of higher learning seeking HRD’s ‘Institute of Eminence’ or world class tag. Seven IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology) and many of the public institutes applied for world-class status. Some of the popular institutions that have applied for the status are Delhi University, JNU, IITs and a few popular private universities. The deadline of 90 days to apply for the institutes of eminence was expired on December 12, 2017.

Union Minister of Human Resource Development, Mr. Prakash Javadekar expressed his happiness on the overwhelming response for setting up world class institutes. There are world-class universities in different countries, and India will soon be part of these countries with its world-class universities, he added.
The selection of 10 public and 10 private institutes for ‘Institute of Eminence’ tag will be completed by March or April 2018. These institutes will be accorded eminence status with a mandated rule of achieving world-class status over a period of ten years. These institutes will have complete autonomy and freedom to choose their own path to become world-class institutions.

The 20 world-class institutes will be allowed to admit over 30 percent international students, recruit 25 percent international faculty, collaborate with top 500 world ranking institutes and offer 20% of its courses in online mode. These institutes will not have any restriction on the fee charged from international students.
