UGC asks AMU to Address Complaints against Unfair Promotion

Taking into account the complaints that have been filed regarding discrimination and violation of rules in promotions and irregularities in recruitment of teachers, the UGC has asked Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) to take action.

The HRD Ministry has asked the UGC to seek a report in this matter that clarifies all the irregularities that have taken place during recruitment and promotions.

UGC has sent the copies of complaints received by individuals to AMU and has asked the university to address the complaints regarding unfair promotion and hiring. UGC also said that teachers must be hired and promoted as per the guidelines set by the UGC.

Addressing the question raised in the Rajya Sabha on August, 3, 2017, the MHRD said that various complaints have been received regarding violation of rules and unfair promotions.

AMU is also among the 11 universities that have been picked by the UGC to audit the academic, financial, research and infrastructural conditions. These universities including AMU will also be provided with quality improvement strategies in order to recruit qualified faculty.

According to reports, teachers who didn’t secure the minimum Academic Performance Indications (API) score of 120 points were promoted by AMU administration instead of teachers who had qualified all the criteria for promotion.

It was also revealed that teachers were promoted without having guided any Ph.D. scholars. In some cases, Promotion was done on the basis of book reviews.

Some of the teachers of AMU stated that the then VC Lt Gen Zameer Uddin Shah had promoted teachers under illegal conditions. Apart from the fact that teachers were promoted without fulfilling minimum eligibility criteria, there was no woman candidate on the expert selection panel that met on February 10, 2017.
