UGC to Increase JRF, SRF Research Fellowships
University Grants Commission (UGC) has increased the JRF, SRF research fellowships. The revised rated of JRF and SRF fellowships are applicable from 1st January 2019.
University Grants Commission -UGC has released an official notification regarding the revised fellowship amount details of Senior Research Fellowship (SRF) and Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) in Science, Social Sciences and Humanities. As per the revised UGC fellowships, SRF will be awarded Rs.35,000 from 28,000 and JRF will be Rs.31,000 from Rs.25,000
The same was proposed during the 539th meeting of UGC took place on 26th February 2019. According to the official notification, the revised rates of UGC fellowships will be applicable from 1st January 2019.
According to the Univesity Grants Commission, the House Rent Allowance (HRA) at the revised rate of 8 per cent, 16 per cent and 24 per cent as per the Government of India regulations. However, it will be only applicable to the location where the research fellows are working. Apart from that, other terms and conditions will remain the same as per the UGC XII Plan JRF guidelines

UGC plays an important role as its recognition is mandatory for colleges and universities. It is applicable for both public and private institutes to enrol students. UGC does not allow universities to use the term University other than the one that has been established under a State Act/ Central Act/ Provincial Act. The universities have to even undergo an inspection which is conducted by the expert panel constituted by the UGC. In case, the university fails to comply to the norms of UGC, the expert panel/ committee will not grant the recognition.
