For the first time in a decade, the University Grants Commission is planning to revise the curriculum of National Eligibility Test (NET). Already, UGC has set up committees to revise the syllabus of each subject with an objective to reflect the changes in what is being taught in the higher learning institutes across India.

The syllabus of NET remained same over a period. Many universities have revised the curriculum of different subjects or courses, and the pattern of NET had not undergone any changes. Therefore, UGC wanted to reflect the changes in curriculum. The committees, constituted by UGC will prepare the draft syllabus and submit the same for approval. Once the draft syllabus is approved, the final decision will be taken on how to implement the revised pattern.

Qualifying in NET is mandatory for those aspiring to be assistant professors or aiming for Junior Research Fellow (JRF). Usually, NET is conducted twice a year (July and December).

As of now, UGC has constituted 25 committees for separate subjects. However, NET is conducted in 90 subjects, and more committees must be constituted to cover all the subjects. According to sources, the committees include people associated with research and teaching.

An official associated with UGC explained that the revised syllabus would be more dynamic, and it will meet the contemporary requirements of the industry.

So far, there is no clarity on holding NET twice a year. CBSE has already expressed its inability to conduct NET twice a year.
