Varsities Must Mention ‘Distance-Mode’ in Degrees: UGC

The University Grants Commission or the UGC has directed all varsities to mention the mode of delivery of educational programme (distance, open learning etc.) on the degrees and certificates issued to students by them.

UGC had stated in a letter recently that many institutes and universities that offer Open and Distance Learning (ODL) courses are issuing degrees, mark sheets, certificates, diplomas etc. without mentioning the mode of delivery of the programme.

In a meeting that was held a couple of months earlier, it was decided that the mode be mentioned to reduce the ambiguities between conventional mode degrees and Open and Distance Learning mode degrees.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) of India was set up by the Indian Union government as per the regulations of the UGC Act of 1956. It falls under the Ministry of Human Resource Development and is a statutory body. The committee was modelled after University Grants Committee of UK which was an advisory committee of the British government. Its main responsibilities include coordination, determination and maintenance of standards of higher education. UGC also provides recognition to universities in India as a part of its duties. Disbursing funds to recognised colleges and universities is also practiced by the commission. Currently, Prof. Ved Prakash is the Chairman of UGC, India. The headquarters of UGC are in New Delhi. Apart from that, it has six regional centres in Pune, Bhopal, Bangalore, Kolkata, Guwahati and Hyderabad.
