WB Higher Education Minister Requests University VCs to Clear Doubts on CBCS Among Students

The West Bengal Higher Education Minister has requested the VCs of the various universities in the state to clear out the doubts that parents and students have regarding the CBCS system in exams. A meeting had been held where the VCs of 22 universities spoke on the matter.

Last year, students across West Bengal protested over poor attendance, which had been witnessed after the implementation of the Choice Based Credit System. The West Bengal Higher Education Minister Partha Chatterjee, on 13th December 2019 asked the Vice-Chancellors of different universities to clear all confusion regarding CBCS in examinations.

Earlier, Partha Chatterjee held a meeting with the Vice-Chancellors of the 22 Universities situated in the stated. While speaking to the media, the mentioned that the meeting had been held with the goal of dissipating any confusion regarding CBCS that are in the minds of students and parents alike.

Chatterjee stated that the students and parents believe that under CBCS, students need 70% attendance in the entire semester, which is incorrect. He further added that VCs have been directed to dismiss all confusion regarding CBCS, which has been viewed as a Semester-oriented system.

One of the Vice-Chancellors has stated that they had been asked to educate the students on the flexibility of the CBCS system, in the meeting. The VC added that the students will be able to learn the subjects of their choice, meanwhile, also ensuring a modern and objective evaluating method.

It had been witnessed that several roadblocks which had been set up due to the protests held by students for earning a poor attendance record, resulting in them being debarred from the semester exams. Sources state that an Education Fair has been scheduled on 3rd and 4th April, wherein the universities will share their “good practices” that have earned an approval.

Among other notification, the Minister added that the all proposed communication must be made by the Chancellor of any state-aided University and should be routed through the Higher Education Department.
