Servants of India Society founded the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics (GIPE) in 1930. GIPE Pune is one of the world's oldest economics research and training institutions. 

R. R. Kale established the institute on June 6, 1930, as a centre for economic study and higher education. Shri R. R. Kale donated an endowment to the Servants of India Society, which was used to establish the institute. The trustees of the institute are the Servants of India Society, a recognised entity formed by nationalist leader Gopal Krishna Gokhale. Applicants need to take an entrance exam for admission to B.Sc, MA, M.Sc, and PhD programmes. Those who pass the entrance examination will subsequently be invited to an interview.
