The University Grants Commission has clarified that Aadhar is not mandatory for the students to avail scholarships or fellowships offered by UGC. Dr. Sunita Siwach, Deputy Secretary of UGC, said that any student who wants to apply for the scholarship should not be denied due to non-availability of aadhar card/number. Apart from aadhar, the candidates have to provide alternative means of identity and details related to bank accounts to avail scholarships.
Earlier, the commission has issued notice circular to all the Universities, and affiliated institutes that aadhar card is mandatory to avail scholarships. It has directed all the institutions to link the names of the candidates with aadhar numbers. The circular also mentioned that aadhar is necessary to avoid duplication, and the real beneficiaries will get the benefits of government scholarships. However, most of the students raised an objection as they did not have aadhar cards.
