Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani invites applications for admission to second semester full time and part time Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) program in Biological Sciences, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Economics and Finance, Management, Mechanical Engineering, Pharmacy, Physics, Humanities and Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary areas such as Biotechnology, Energy, Environment, Robotics, Nano-Science & Nanotechnology and Water Management offered at Hyderabad, Goa and Pilani campuses for the academic session 2015-16.
Admission Modality
A candidate is normally admitted to the Ph.D. programme after passing his/her Ph.D. qualifying examination. A few candidates may be admitted to the programme as provisional candidates before passing the Ph.D. qualifying examination. This provision is applicable to full-time research scholars on the campus.
Tuition fee
All Full-Time students working in Indian campuses are eligible for 90% waiver in tuition fee provided they have not obtained any unsatisfactory or NC grade in preceding semester.
Stipend
Depending on the availability, the student will be provided fellowship stipend either from BITS or from sponsored projects. A student can avail fellowship provided by National funding agencies such as UGC, CSIR, DBT, DST, ICMR etc.
Accommodation
All full-time students will be accommodated in the student hostel.
Leave
· Each “Full- Time” candidate is eligible for 30 days of vacation and 15 days of casual leave in an academic year (August to July).
· Special casual leave of 15 days is permissible for attending conferences/workshop/symposiums/training programmes, etc.
· For female candidates, maternity leave of 90 days is permitted.
Duration of Ph.D.
A student must submit his thesis within ten semesters (excluding summer terms) to be counted from the semester next to passing the qualifying examination. If the student fails to submit his thesis within stipulated period he may request the respective DRC for extension of time. Such extension for submission of the thesis is limited to a maximum of four semesters. Thus, the duration for submitting the final thesis (including all extensions and semester withdrawals) are limited to 14 semesters. If a candidate fails to submit his/her final thesis during this period, he/she will be discontinued from the programme. The female candidates who have availed maternity leave during this period may be given one extra semester for thesis submission.
The existing students who were admitted on or before Dec 31, 2007, will be required to submit their thesis not later than Dec 31, 2015.
Eligibility Criteria
Candidates with M.E./M.Pharm./MBA/M.Phil of BITS or its equivalent with a minimum of 60% aggregate in the qualifying examination is eligible.
Candidates with an M.Sc./B.E./B.Pharm or an equivalent degree with a minimum of 60% aggregate may also be considered for Ph.D. admission subject to their suitability and competence. For the Ph.D. program in Humanities and Social Sciences, candidates with an M.A. and with the minimum of 55% aggregate may also be considered.
Candidates are required to devote their full time towards Ph.D
Candidates working in organizations situated in close vicinity of campuses of BITS Pilani will be eligible.
