AMU Teacher Association Upset Over UGCs Decision of Autonomy

Aligarh Muslim University Teachers Association- AMUTA expressed their dismay and concern over the UGCs decision of granting full autonomy to AMU and various other universities and institutes across the country. According to AMUTA, the policy is not helpful for the weaker sections of the society and will deprive them of education.

They also said that granting of full autonomy to universities like AMU and others is one of the calculative moves of the ministry which will lead to the privatization of higher education. As per them, the new policy will deprive the marginalized sections of society of higher and technical education during the executive committee meeting which took place on 22 March 2018.

University Grants Commission has granted full autonomy to 8 colleges and 52 universities including AMU, JNU among others. However, the decision of the HRD is facing a lot of opposition from students association and from AMUTA. AMUTA members are strongly opposing the decision as they believe this will result in the denial of education to the extremely backward group of the country which AMU has always tried to serve.

According to the statement released by AMUTA, the autonomy has nothing to do with the freedom and new ideas. To them, it is an extremely arrogant step of the ministry which violates various principles of access to higher education. As per them, the financial autonomy will lead to the exploitation of faculty, administrators, and students.
