Professor Anju Seth is the first women to be appointed as the Director of IIM Calcutta. On November 17, 2018, she took over the post of Director, and she will assume the charge after a month, confirmed IIM Calcutta. Until Professor Anju Seth assumes the charge, Professor Leena Chatterjee will act as officiating director.
Expressing her happiness over the appointment of a woman director to IIM Calcutta, Officiating Director - Professor Leena Chatterjee said that it is a good sign, as women are being appointed in leadership roles and key positions in India. In the past 34 years, IIM Calcutta has witnessed the presence of women in different fields. The female strength of IIM Calcutta in PG management courses has improved significantly in the last few years. At present, 30% of female students are pursuing various courses at IIM Calcutta, she added.

IIM Calcutta search-cum-selection committee had shortlisted three US-based academicians for the post of Director –
- Suresh Ramanathan (Professor of Marketing) – Mayas Business School, Texas
- Jayant R Kale (Professor of Finance) – Northeastern University
- Anju Seth – Pamplin College of Business, Virginia Tech
In October 2018, Board of Governors (BoG) of IIM Calcutta selected Anju Seth for the job. She is the second woman director an IIM. In February 2017, Neelu Malhotra was appointed as the Director of IIM Sirmaur, and she was the first woman director of an IIM in India.

Anju Seth was an alumnus of IIM Calcutta in 1978. She completed her Doctorate in 1988 from the University of Michigan. Professor Seth joined Virginia Tech in 2008 where she headed the Department of Management (2008 – 2013).
