    Important Question on Litmus Test

Question | A drop of colourless liquid was placed on blue litmus paper then the colour of the paper turned red. The liquid should be -

Answer with Explanation | The liquid should be an acidic solution, such as dilute hydrochloric acid (HCl), ethanoic acid (acetic acid), or lemon juice. In chemistry, litmus paper is used as an indicator to determine the nature of a substance: Acidic substances turn blue litmus paper red. Basic (alkaline) substances turn red litmus paper blue. Neutral substances (like pure water) do not change the color of either litmus paper. Since the blue litmus paper turned red, it confirms the presence of hydrogen ions in the liquid, which is the defining characteristic of an acid.
