Centre Approves Setting up of AIIMS in Telangana

Union Health Ministry has approved setting up of AIIMS in Telangana. The premier medical institute will come up at NIMS Bibinagar campus.

Centre Approves Setting up of AIIMS in Telangana

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has given its nod for setting up All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Telangana. It was in 2016, that the state government of Telangana submitted a proposal to the centre for setting up AIIMS. The state government has selected Bibinagar campus of NIMS (Nizam Institute of Medical Sciences) to set up AIIMS. It is the first time that the Union Ministry of Health agreed to start AIIMS at a site where there is an asset in the form of hospital.

Principal Secretary of Health and Family Welfare Ministry, Shanthi Kumara informed the state government of Telangana to initiate the process of handing over the land and NIMS Hospital located at Bibinagar to the centre.

The Bibinagar campus of NIMS is spread over an area of 161 acres. The state government has to accumulate another 50 acres of land adjacent to the hospital and handover it to the Government of India. The construction of hospital building at NIMS Bibinagar campus has been partially completed and is ready to start in-patient facilities with 150 beds. The state government has spent Rs. 73 crore for constructing hospital buildings.

Since AIIMS Telangana has received a formal approval, senior doctors in Telangana are expecting that the premier medical institute will start functioning earlier than expected.

In April 2018, the Union Health Ministry had given its principle nod to set up AIIMS in Telangana. The state government had submitted a detailed report and a high-level committee constituted by Health Ministry inspected the NIMS Bibinagar facility.
