The academic council of the Nagpur University has decided to halve the number of exams and assignments in the credit-based semester system.
RTM Nagpur University to implement the 60:40 formula, is all set to be launched from the academic year 2016-17.
The academic council has decided to have the number of exams and assignments in the credit-based semester system which was implemented for undergraduate courses.
Under this 60:40 pattern colleges now will be empowered to give 40% weightage via internal assessment; it would reduce the number of papers and assignments.
As per the council’s decision, colleges will be able to conduct the internal assessment of each semester, that sessional exams for students in undergraduate courses will now need to answer one paper and one assignment which will carry 40 marks. The questions papers will set and exam will be conducted by the colleges. The assessment of the answer books will be done online.
There is also a proposal for five marks given for class participation and five for attendance in the college.
Currently, 75 percent is mandatory in the college
Though students and teachers are happy with the move, few termed the new formula a compromise. A principal of a college that the council has tried to appease students and professors both and has also saved face by introducing the same weightage, but the excessive marking issue has not been tackled
Others universities in the state few of them already practising the formula including Mumbai University and Amravati University.
Generally in this case college ends up giving full marks to students for better result of the college.
The decision of RTM Nagpur university is welcomed by the students.
