DU to Introduce CAT-like Common Entrance Exam for UG Courses

Delhi University will soon introduce a common entrance exam on the lines of CAT for admission to UG programmes offered by affiliated colleges. The exam will be conducted to give a rest to the cutoff system based on class 12 board exam.

With cutoff reaching as high as 99% for admissions to some colleges, the admission committee decided that it was time to bring some reforms in the admission process of DU. Although some of the reforms will be introduced from the session 2017 but the common entrance exam will not be introduced this year.

Recommendations will soon be made by the Admission Committee regarding the changes in the admission process.

Following are some of the changes that are suggested by the admission committee:

  • Common entrance exam similar to CAT
  • Admission based on the merit of entrance exams
  • Introduction of an early admission calendar
  • Advancement of applications for UD admissions for the academic session 2017

It was suggested by the Vice Chancellor of DU, Mr. Yogesh Tyagi that the applications will be out in April 2017. Students will be able to apply for all the programmes including DU’s four professional courses.

The reforms are meant to enhance the admission process of DU. However, the University officials are divided in their opinion as some of them believe that early applications will not be an advantage for all the students. Officials added that only a selected number of students will benefit from the process including students with gap years and transfer cases.

DU officials also suggested that it will take them time to implement a common exam as a wide range of students from different backgrounds and board of examinations apply for DU.

The Vice Chancellor also added that the changes will be carefully implanted and not in a hurry. He also informed that these recommendations will be discussed at length with students, teachers, principals and with people outside the academia as well.
