76% Engineering Seats Vacant in Kerala

76% of engineering seats remained vacant in Kerala self-financing engineering colleges. This year, five colleges across the state recorded zero admissions while 11 colleges were able to fill only half of the engineering seats under merit quota.

76% Engineering Seats Vacant in Kerala

Kerala is one of the states that witnessed a huge number of engineering seats left vacant for the academic session 2018-19. Over 76% of engineering seats remain vacant in self-financing colleges across Kerala. Now, these colleges are resorting to different steps to fill the vacant seats. The colleges are inviting the applications from students who did not qualify the KEAM entrance exam for the admission to engineering courses.

The vacant seats in self-financing colleges have been changed to NRI quota so that non-qualified students can take admission. The candidates who did not score minimum marks in the entrance test can also take admission in engineering courses under NRI quota.

As per KEAM exam rules, the candidates will have to score at least 10 marks in each paper to be included in the KEAM rank list. The management of self-financing colleges is ready to grant admission to students who did not score minimum marks in the entrance test and not included in the rank list.

The self-financing engineering colleges in Kerala will conduct spot admission round to fill the vacant seats. Compared to the previous year, the number of engineering seats available under merit quota has increased this year. This year, 76% merit seats remained vacant while 67% seats were unfilled last year.

This year, five colleges across the state recorded zero admissions while 11 colleges were able to fill only half of the engineering seats under merit quota. Out of 20,674 merit quota seats in 108 colleges, only 5,051 seats have been filled.

The pass percentage of many engineering colleges is less than 30%. Students in these colleges have no clarity about their future.
