Expressing his concern about the poor performance of Indian universities in world rankings, Prime Minister of India, Mr. Narendra Modi indicated that the government is planning to liberalise these universities by providing Rs. 10,000 crore to 20 universities to ensure that they are counted among the best in the world. He made this statement while addressing at the centenary celebrations of Patna University. The government has already granted autonomy to Indian Institutes of Management through the IIM Bill, freeing them from the shackles of regulations and restrictions set by the government, he added.

Highlights from PM’s Address on World-Class Universities: -

  • The centre will provide autonomy and a grant of Rs. 10,000 to 20 leading universities across the country for the next five years to make them world class.
  • PM Narendra Modi expressed that Nalanda and Takshashila were the universities that attracted students from all over the world in the olden days while the modern universities are failing to attract international students.
  • The selection of an institute or universities for ‘Institute of Eminence’ status, performance will be considered as the major criterion. It will not be based on any recommendation.
  • The institutes or universities will be selected based on a challenge in which they need to prove their mettle. The selection will be based on a few factors including performance, history and its roadmap reach global benchmarks. The government will appoint a third party professional agency for selecting the institutes.
  • The Prime Minister gave a call to all the educational institutes to adopt innovative methods of teaching rather than following the same old conventional way of teaching.

During the centenary celebrations of Patna University, Chief Minister of Bihar, Mr. Nitish Kumar urged PM Modi to grant central university status to Patna University.
