Harmanpreet Kaur to receive Honorary D.Litt from Jadavpur UniversityJadavpur University in Kolkata is all set to honour Harmanpreet Kaur with an Honorary Doctor of Letters (D.Litt.) degree, celebrating her remarkable role in leading India’s women’s cricket team to their first-ever ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup title. The idea to present Harmanpreet Kaur with this prestigious recognition came during a special meeting held by the university’s deans, called by the new Vice-Chancellor, Chiranjib Bhattacharya. The honorary degree will officially be presented during the university’s convocation ceremony scheduled for December 24, 2025.
This gesture from one of Kolkata’s best-known universities highlights how her powerful leadership and contribution to women’s cricket have inspired millions of young girls across India. Even though a D.Litt degree is usually awarded for contributions in literature or humanities, universities often confer it as an honorary title for exceptional achievements in other fields, and Harmanpreet’s World Cup win has clearly made her a standout figure in Indian sports.

The decision now awaits the final nod from West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose, who is also the ex officio chancellor of state-aided universities. Once approved, this degree will officially place Harmanpreet among other respected Indian sportspersons who have received honorary degrees, such as P.T. Usha, Mary Kom, and Rahul Dravid.
The upcoming convocation also holds special importance because Jadavpur University faced delays earlier due to the absence of a permanent vice-chancellor. With the appointment of Chiranjib Bhattacharya, those issues have been resolved, allowing the ceremony to run smoothly this year. The university is also considering notable personalities like Nobel laureate Abhijit Vinayak Banerjee, DRDO chief Sameer V. Kamat, and ANRF CEO Shivkumar Kalyanaraman as possible chief guests.
