As per the suggestions of Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi, UGC is working on a plan to make father’s name optional on degrees. According to sources, HRD Ministry has also accepted the suggestion and has directed UGC to carry out the procedure for the same. HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar revealed that a student could mention either his mother or father’s name in the documents as per his wish. The ministry does not have any objection with regard to the suggestion made by Maneka Gandhi. UGC will soon formulate a plan on the same.

Maneka Gandhi made the suggestion to HRD Ministry through a written statement. She was moved by the concerns raised by single mothers and wanted the government to make one's Father’s name optional on the degree certificate. She further wrote that several women who were separated from their husbands approached her, and explained their problems in getting the degree certificate issued for their children without father’s name.

Therefore, Maneka Gandhi approached the government to change the rules on the same. Now, it is the responsibility of UGC to roll out a plan.
Recently, the government also launched eSanad, an online portal for the verification of certificates. The online mechanism will help the recruiters or colleges to verify the academic certificates or documents of the students online.
HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar also launched the anti-ragging mobile app through which students can register complaints directly. The minister further cautioned the senior students not to indulge in ragging and advised them to act as a mentor for junior students.
