Ministry of Human Resource and Development is seeking suggestions regarding the inclusion of Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and People of Indian Origins (PIOs) as teachers in the proposed world class institutes. Apart from teachers, the ministry also wants to include students to attain global reach.

One of the senior officials revealed that the broad counters for the proposed 20 world class institutes had been worked out to a large extent.

He further added that inclusion of NRIs and PIOs as teachers is a call that is being considered by the ministry. The success of these proposed 20 world class institutes depends on the global reach. Therefore, the inclusion of NRIs and PIOs shall be considered. The ministry is seeking suggestions on the same. On the other hand, the policy makers are in constant fear that if NRIs and PIOs are included in the system, it will take away the substantial amount of posts (for teachers) and seats (for students).

Alternatively, HRD Ministry also believes that the inclusion of NRIs and PIOs will depend on the needs and requirements of the education industry. More so, it will be demand based. Therefore, preference will be given to those who are residing in India.

With an objective to overcome the challenges in the process of developing world class institutes, the Consultative Committee of HRD Ministry recommended filling the vacant teaching posts in NITs, IITs and 40 central universities to maintain standards in higher education.
