IIT Campus to be Set Up in Jamaica

India will set up its first ever foreign IIT in the soil of Jamaica. The President said that the Government of India is prepared to partner with Jamaica and share its technical expertise and knowledge.

IIT Campus to be Set Up in Jamaica

In the near future, India will set up its first foreign IIT in Jamaica, a Caribbean island nation. Jamaica has shown interest in having an IIT on its soil. The Indian president, who is on a four-day visit to the nation said that under the National Education policy released in 2020, India plans to establish new Indian Institutes of Technology abroad and he is glad that Jamaica is one of the first countries to express interest in hosting an IIT. 

The President also said that the Government of India is prepared to partner with Jamaica and share its technical expertise and knowledge in order to improve Jamaican education and business. 

Indian President Kovind while addressing the state Banquet Hosted by Governor-General of Jamaica said, "We must get our young minds to work jointly in several fields like Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, Jamaican traditional medicine and Ayurveda, and in building together a climate-smart world. We must capture their imagination and energy to build a society that is prosperous, progressive and peaceful".

By building offshore campuses, the NEP intends to not only attract foreign students but also build a brand for Indian institutes abroad. In addition, Indian students will have more opportunities to take courses abroad and collaborate with international professors. According to an earlier agreement between the UAE and India, an Indian Institute of Technology will be established in the UAE. 

The President further stated that Jamaica's commitment to our (India and Jamaica) bilateral relations and the importance they place on us are greatly appreciated. There are many areas in which India and Jamaica are natural partners. He said, "We should work together as thriving democracies, as nations committed to ethical market practices, as nations that respect an inclusive, fair, stable, secure, and rules-based international order".

The first ever Indian president to visit Jamaica is Mr. Ram Nath Kovind. He was accompanied by Savita Kovind, the first lady of India and his wife, as well as his daughter Swati.
