IIT Kharagpur recently organized a two-day Research & Development (R&D) Club meeting for India-based French companies. The French Embassy had collaborated with IIT Kharagpur to organize this meeting which turned out to be a beneficial venture for IIT Kharagpur. The main objective of the event was to promote research and academic collaborations and people exchange in industrial sector between India and France. The event also focused on promoting joint academic and research programmes.

Some of the major French-based corporate houses that participated in the event were Lumiplan, Solvay, Total Oil and Saint Gobain. The Indo-French Centre for Promotion of Advanced Research funded by the Indian government, French government and Consulate General of France in Kolkata was also one among the participants.
During the meeting, IIT Kharagpur proposed the setting up of joint critical science institute. It will be an Indo-French institute led by IIT Kharagpur. As per the proposal, selected French companies will be invited to become partners of joint critical science institute. The premier institute is planning to take the proposal to Government of India.

The other two thrust areas identified by IIT Kharagpur were a French Vertical in National Digital Library and Indo-France Heritage Corridor of Bengal.
Dean of International Relations at IIT Kharagpur, Baidurya Bhattacharya revealed that the premier institute is set to sign MoUs with four French universities for collaborative opportunities in all areas identified by IIT Kharagpur. At present, IIT Kharagpur has collaborations with popular French brands in India such as TOTAL and Air Bus, he added.
