IIT Kharagpur and Tata Medical Centre to Collaborate for Joint Academic & Research Programmes

  • IIT Kharagpur and Tata Medical Centre have joined hands to take up various activities in interdisciplinary medical research and technology.
  • The major emphasis will be on collaborative research projects through integrated courses offered by the IIT Kharagpur.
IIT Kharagpur and Tata Medical Centre to Collaborate for Joint Academic & Research Programmes

Tata Medical Centre, Kolkata and Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur will soon enter into a collaboration for launching join education, research and outreach programmes. Both IIT Kharagpur and Tata Medical Centre will take various activities in the field of interdisciplinary medical research and technology through this collaboration. IIT Kharagpur will officially announce more details pertaining to joint programmes on January 4, 2018.

Apart from joint education, research and outreach programme, the collaboration will focus on promoting interaction between medical professions, faculty and students of both the institutes. The interaction will further enable them to take up joint academic and research programmes. IIT Kharagpur and Tata Medical Centre will promote joint supervision of doctoral, masters and undergraduate students on a reciprocal basis. The major emphasis will be on collaborative research projects.

Already, Tata Memorial Centre and IIT Kharagpur have signed a memorandum of understanding to offer Master’s degree courses in specialised areas. IIT Kharagpur had conducted a brainstorming session to finalise the curriculum, course and syllabi details of these specialised courses.

According to sources, in the first phase, the integrated M.Sc-Ph.D. course of IIT Kharagpur will focus on molecular medical microbiology, nuclear medicine and medical physics. Tata Medical Centre and IIT Kharagpur will jointly develop the curriculum of the course.

Students of this course will be encouraged to spend at least one semester in each institute with the joint supervision of scientists and faculty of both the institutes. After the successful completion of the course, IIT Kharagpur will award the degree.
