Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur will set up Centre of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence (AI) soon. Another decision taken by IIT Kharagpur is an extension of the science-heritage initiative. The major objective of the science-heritage initiative of IIT Kharagpur is to boost documentation, promoting classical and folk arts as well as music with the support of alumni.
IIT Kharagpur has planned two centres including Centre of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence and Centre of Excellence for the Extension of Science and Heritage. Alumni of IIT Kharagpur are playing a significant role in developing these two centres. Director of IIT Kharagpur gave clarification in this regard during his address at 67th Foundation Day celebrations of IIT Kharagpur.

According to sources, Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur needs Rs. 20 crore initially to set up Centre of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence. The amount is required to get started for the core infrastructure. Later, the Centre will be also inked with the supercomputing facility, cloud computing and other relevant facilities. The Centre will take up some interesting projects in Climate Change & Artificial Intelligence, exceptional projects on Healthcare & Artificial Intelligence. For this purpose, IIT Kharagpur requires augmented funds. As of now, the research work for the project has commenced.

The Centre of Excellence for the Extension of Science and Heritage needs Rs. 15 crore initially. The Centre will play a vital role in modernisation and dissemination of classical and folk arts. The Centre will lay emphasis on documentation of folk arts, which are on the verge of extinction. IIT Kharagpur is also planning to encourage students to take up research on classical and folk music.
