IIT Madras to Host World’s Largest Combustion Research Centre

  • The NCCRD has been established at a total cost of Rs 90 crore.
IIT Madras to Host World’s Largest Combustion Research Centre

Indian Institute of Technology (Madras) will host the world’s largest Combustion Research Centre on October 13, 2017. The research centre will address the twin challenges of environmental protection and alternative energy afflicting the emerging economy such as India by laying more emphasis on effective utilisation of combustion as a means of thermal-chemical energy conversion.

The NCCRD (National Centre for Combustion Research and Development) is being supported by Department of Science and Technology (DST). A similar kind of centre was also set up at Indian Institute of Science (Bangalore).

IIT Madras has been working on this project with the help of 30 faculty members from six departments, and it is the largest grouping of academic combustion researchers globally. The total cost incurred for setting up NCCRD at IIM Madras is Rs. 90 crore. The centre will play an important role in developing state-of-the-art competencies/capabilities in combustion research involving renowned experts in the country.

Professor Satyanarayanan Chakravarthy, Professor-In-Change of NCCRD at IIT Madras revealed that the centre would mostly work on industry-related problems of the next generation in close collaboration with organisations in application sectors of fire protection, process industry, thermal power, Aerospace and Automotive.

Professor Satyanarayana further elaborated the goals of NCCRD that include: -

  • Addressing grand challenge topics of practical importance
  • Continuing education for academics and young industry professionals
  • Industry collaboration
  • Workforce development at Ph.D and master’s levels
  • Creating knowledge network with other combustion researchers
  • Provide state-of-the-art facilities for research
