IIT Madras: The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras is launching three new MA programmes. In reference to this, the Institute stated that it is broadening the scope of the MA programme by introducing Economics to the previously existing streams of Development Studies & English Studies. All these three streams will now be offered as two-year programmes rather than the present five-year integrated MA programmes. These programmes will be available from the academic year 2022-23.
Each stream would have 25 seats reserved for Indian students. These programmes would also be made available to international students on a supernumerary basis. The first cycle of the application process will begin in March/April 2023, with courses beginning in July 2023. Admissions to the two-year M.A. programmes will be based on an entrance examination rather than the HSEE. The details of this entrance examination will soon be shared by the institute.
By making the MA programmes accessible after graduation for several streams, it is expected that a more diversified collection of students will be admitted into the institute.

"The revamping of the MA course is done with the purpose of making the same accessible to more students who have earned their bachelor degrees from diverse fields spanning humanities, science, engineering, commerce, and so on," stated Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras. " Such exposure to humanities and social science is critical for future generations of students to meet and handle the various difficulties presented by the modern world. This enlarged range of MA programmes will provide students with additional opportunities for placement and employment since they will be trained as domain-specific specialists with international readiness and a national emphasis."
The M.A. program's course curriculum will be revised to incorporate more current disciplines such as Economics of Innovation, Computational Linguistics, Health Policy, Urban Planning & Development, Climate Economics, Environmental Humanities, and Technology & Policy among others.
