IIT Roorkee’s New Technique Could Make Antibiotics More Effective

Researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) have worked out a new scientific research that will help reverse drug resistance and challenge the capabilities of existing antibiotics so that they could they could function effectively kill the bacteria.

Efflux pump is a technique used by bacteria to become resistant to a drug. They act as small motors to help flush out the antibiotics from the cells. Due to which the drug is unable to reach its respective target and the bacteria manage to survive even when the antibiotic is present.

According to the reports of International Journal of Antimicrobial Agents, the researchers have talked about the discovery of a molecule, 'IITR08027'. This new molecule helps to disrupt to energize the efflux pumps which slows down the outflow of antibiotics. This molecule is ideal for drug resistance because of its features such as low cell toxicity.

Also, IITR08027 helps in treating urinary tract and respiratory infections when combined with the antibiotic such as fluoroquinolones. They help in killing the bacterial cells.

Antibiotic resistance is one of the biggest threat to health sector today. As per Ranjana Pathania, Associate Professor IIT Roorkee, more than 1,900 people die each day, which is 70,000 deaths per year due to antibiotic-resistant infections.

Hence, the team wanted to come up with a more effective plan, which would help in improving the efficiency of the already existing antibiotics such as norfloxacin.
