IITs and IIMs to be Accredited by NAAC: HRD Ministry
Minster of Human Resource and Development Prakash Javadekar announced that NAAC would accredit national level institutes like IITs and IIMs. It is a surprising announcement made by the Ministry. The target is to accredit all the institutions within ten years. The announcement was made during a programme at the Indira Group of Institutes, Wakad on August 20, 2016.
The minister also said that NAAC is competing for accreditation of 1,000 institutes in a year. It means it takes 38 years to accredit all the institutions across the country. However, the ministry is planning to complete the process within a decade. The ministry has already negotiated with the heads of the IITs and IIMs. The move taken by the ministry received appreciation from many. Currently, a final draft is being prepared for how these institutions have to function.
Dr. Arun Nigvekar, Chairman of UGC and Founder of NAAC, said that accreditation is given to the institutions after the spot inspections. The norms are prepared based on the international rules of UNESCO.
