Jadavpur University to Implement Domicile Reservation from Upcoming Academic Year

The Faculty Council of Engineering & Technology - Jadavpur University (FCET), Kolkata is also set to implement 90 per cent reservation for domicile candidates after they received the green signals from the State government. The domicile reservation policy will be applicable from the 2019-20 academic year in the engineering faculty only for the general seats.

Earlier this month a meeting on the topic of introducing Domicile in 16 departments of the Bachelors of Engineering (BE) course. Domicile Policy at JU will assure priority to ‘Home Students’ for admissions at Jadavpur University from the 2020-2021 academic year. The proposal was forwarded to the Executive Council (EC) of the varsity, and the final decision will be taken soon.

Out of 16, 12 departments were present in the meeting and gave their nod to introduce domicile. However, the opinions of 4 departments are unknown as the four HODs (Head of the Department) were not present in the meeting. Chiranjib Bhattacharya, dean of Engineering Department suggested that the final resolution will be made after listening to the opinions of rest 4 departments.

Chiranjib Bhattacharya told the media that not only engineering, many other departments are also demanding domicile policy for Jadavpur University admissions also. The reason behind this demand is, many students from states other than West Bengal are lagging behind as they are not being able to cope-up with the academics in JU. Also, there has been a constant appeal by the students of other states (except West Bengal) to transfer the medium of teaching into Hindi. Some teachers, as well as students of Jadavpur University, had alleged students from other states to be involved in moral-policing.
A teacher of Mechanical department said that students from other states are not showing academic excellence in classes even after acquiring top positions in WBJEE which is the entrance test for Engineering conducted by the state of West Bengal.
