JMI part-time B.E students have been protesting since July 23, 2018, demanding the varsity to transform the part-time B.E course into the full-time course. The students alleged that the prospectus of B.E course did not specify whether B.E is a full-time or part-time course.
For the past three weeks, since 23rd July 2018, about 1,400 part-time B.E (Bachelor of Engineering) students of Jamia Millia Islamia have been protesting with a demand to convert the part-time B.E course into a regular engineering course.
The students alleged that the prospectus of the B.E course did not specify whether B.E is a full-time or part-time course. Now, the students are demanding the varsity to transform part-time B.E into a full-time course so that they become eligible for government jobs.
The students further alleged that the varsity did not mention the mode of the course, i.e., part-time or full-time in fee receipt and degree. Even in the college prospectus, the varsity specified B.E as an evening course. It did not give any information or use the word part-time. The students who joined the course assumed that the course was full-time.

The ongoing protest also witnessed two students whose health deteriorated due to the hunger strike. They have been admitted to the hospital.
A B.E student who completed the course from JMI revealed that one of his classmates applied for a job in Bengal Electricity Board. However, the authority rejected the application because part-time B.E holders are not eligible for the job, he added.
Dean of Department of Engineering, Mehtab Alam revealed that UGC approved JMI’s B.E course in the 1980s. Ever since the varsity received approval for B.E course, it is being offered in part-time mode. The classes are being conducted in the evenings and practicals at weekends. Not only JMI, but also, no other university mentions in the degree provided that the course was offered on a part-time basis, he clarified.

Mehtab Alam further indicated that some PSUs do not hire part-time B.E graduates. However, JMI’s part-time B.E graduates are skilled, as they get hands-on-training and practical experience in labs. The students who have been protesting are misguided. Since some public sectors have rejected job applications, students need to look for other options like going for higher studies or appearing for civil services – engineering services examination etc, he explained.
