Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) Wins the Software Edition of Smart India Hackathon 2020

Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) had participated in the Smart India Hackathon 2020 and emerged a winner in the software edition. Team 'Monks' of JMI won the section.

JMI Smart India Hackathon

Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has emerged the winner of the software edition of Smart India Hackathon 2020 (SIH2020). The team ‘Monks’ of JMI which comprised six students of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, participated in the Software Edition of the hackathon in problem statement NS275 and won. They also received a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh.

The team Monks built a software system for helping the agriculture sector. They did so by finding land usage in six different classes and then predicted crop production for the next year. This method will eventually help the government in planning their policies by anticipating the problems of flood and low rainfall even before they occur. The team emerged as winners of the NS275 problem statement towards the end hackathon which was of 36 hours long. The Bihar government had given this problem statement as the state faces flood problems almost every year. Apart from team Monks, there were three other teams from the Faculty of Engineering and Technology - JMI, that reached the finals of the different problem statement.

About Smart India Hackathon (SIH)

The AICTE (All India Council of Technical Education) and the Innovation Cell of the MHRD (Ministry of Human Resource Development) organise the Smart India Hackathon (SIH) in association with some private organisations. It is an initiative held at the national level and focuses on providing students with a platform for solving some of the pressing problems that we face in our daily lives. Through this, its aim is to inculcate a mindset of problem-solving and a culture of product innovation.

The problem statements of Smart India Hackathon are submitted by State Ministries, Central Departments, and industries etc. This initiative had commenced in 2017 and this year marked the 4th edition of SIH which was conducted virtually because of the coronavirus situation. In the first stage, it was a college-level hackathon and the teams that were selected from their respective colleges had to choose problem statements in which they wanted to work. The participants had to send their entries with theoretical solutions.

Team Monks, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI)

Team 'Monks' of JMI worked under the guidance of Professor Tanvir Ahmad and consisted of 5 students from the 3rd year of Computer Engineering and one student from the 2nd year of Electronics and Communication Engineering. The names of students from the Department if of Computer Engineering are Gaurav Chaudhary (team leader), Neetesh Kaushik, Pranav Gautam, Ashish Singh,  Lakshya Chaudhary, and the sixth member from the second year is Nashrah Naseem.

On the basis of submissions, a total of 243 problem statements were selected for the finale and 1,081 teams were shortlisted for the Software Edition of SIH. A 36-hour long hackathon was organised from August 1 to August 3 and the results were announced on August 4, 2020. A total of 28 problem statements were dropped as no team was able to find any solution for them. Teams were declared winners for the remaining 215 problem statements,
