Karnataka State Government Demands 25% of Seats for Karnataka Students at IIT Dharwad

The state government of Karnataka demanded the Central government to amend the act of IIT Dharwad and requested to reserve 25% of seats to the local students of Karnataka. The academic year commenced on August 1, 2016, and only seven students are selected from Karnataka. The state government has allotted 500 acres of land free of cost for the construction of this institute. The government asserted that preference must be given to local students as the state government is contributing to the Institute.

The state government also demanded to inaugurate the institute officially. A request has been made for the separate IIIT at Raichur, recognition of the courses offered by Karnataka Open University and introducing Railway Engineering course in the state.

The Health Minister of the state Mr. Basava Raja Reddy requested the central government to grant recognition to Karnataka Open University as early as possible. The state government has developed the university on the lines of UGC.

He also mentioned that the state government is ready to provide land for the construction of IIT or IIIT at Raichur as it is a backward region. He requested the Union Aviation and Railways Ministers to grant permission for the establishment of flying schools in the state.
