Kiran Bedi Shares Insights on How to Make a Top-Class University

After being told that the VIT University in Chennai is the only university in India to receive a 4-star rating from QS, Kiran Bedi, Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry and retired IAS officer said that we need to question why other Indian universities are not able to achieve good international ratings.

She shared various aspects that Indian universities need to work on to enhance their performance. She talked about nine parameters that are essential to make a top-class university.

Check out Kiran Bedi’s nine performance parameters for a top-class university:

  1. The first parameter is the contribution of students for the development of the society. Bedi said that students must be encouraged to work for the welfare of people while they are studying in the institute or university. Reviewing the performance of alumni annually can help the institutes immensely.
  2. According to Bedi, the second parameter that should be considered for top class institutions is the involvement of students in government services. She said that students should be motivated to fight promotion and stand for the people.
  3. The number of community and corporate leaders produced by an institute also plays an important role in elevating its performance level.
  4. Promotion of entrepreneurship is another important parameter for all universities. A college should also be evaluated on the basis of start-ups and practical learning projects promoted on campus.
  5. Bedi also said that an institute is known by the number of creative professionals – musicians, activists, journalists, sportspersons, etc. it produces every year.
  6. Apart from the corporate education, a university/ institute should also be assessed on the number of honest and successful politicians it churns out at the grassroots level.
  7. Bedi also added that a university is successful if it is able to educate students into becoming giving citizens who can bring elemental changes in the community.
  8. Another important aspect of the university is to develop a lifelong learning habit in students.
  9. Bedi said that the last parameter for judging a university’s potential is to analyse the ability to inculcate deep values among students.
