Kolkata Medical College: Students Protest Against Violation of Merit- Based Admissions

Hundreds of medicine aspirants from Kolkata protested against the management of Kolkata Medical College on September 3, 2016. The students alleged that the college had created the merit list based on donations. The college violated the merit-based system and granted admissions to those who paid donations.

The college had announced the merit list on September 1, 2016. The names of 77 candidates had been included in the merit list. The students who were not on the list protested on the campus for four hours. They demanded the management to release the fresh list. They criticised the management for allotting admissions to candidates who paid donations. The counselling process which was being supervised by an observer appointed by Lower Divisional Court (LDC) was disrupted. The police reached the campus and took the situation under control.

The police officials mentioned that it was a silent protest, and everything was brought under control. The counselling process began later and continued smoothly. However, some of the guardians have decided to appeal to the court regarding the issue, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Bandana Barun Chandrashekhar.
