Madras HC Directs Medical Colleges in Pondicherry to Submit the List of Admitted Students

The High Court of Madras has directed all the seven medical colleges in Pondicherry to submit the list of admitted students to postgraduate medical courses for the academic session 2017-18. The court further ordered that these medical colleges must furnish the details without undergoing counselling by an official panel CENTAC. Justice M. Sundar & Chief Justice Indira Banerjee issued the order last week while hearing a plea filed by an advocate seeking to declare the list of all the admitted students. The petitioner sought clarity whether all these medical colleges admitted students as per PG Medical Education Regulations. The petitioner also raised a few issues regarding the admission process.

The petitioner further submitted that all the PG medical colleges in Pondicherry must admit students to PG medical courses through a common counselling conducted by CENTAC or Centralised Admission Committee. The counselling process took place in May 2017. He further added that these colleges offer 24 PG medical courses and 314 seats. The students who secured a seat have deposited the fee prescribed by CENTAC on receipt of their provisional allotment letters.

The petitioner raised a few issues that these medical colleges in Pondicherry refused to accept the fees deposited by the selected candidates and demanded Rs. 40 to Rs. 50 lakh. According to the petitioner, these colleges admitted only those students who paid the fee demanded by the college. The seven medical colleges also granted admission to those candidates who did not participate in CENTAC. Thus, the medical colleges violated the rules, he concluded.
