Maharashtra CM Seeks Update on Scholarship Scam at Nagpur University

Devendra Fadnavis, Chief Minister of Maharashtra, expressed his dissatisfaction over the investigation that is being conducted in the scholarship scam. He claimed that investigation is going at a slow pace. As per the sources, the CM had sought the action taken a report from various departments which have been involved in the scam.

The scholarship scam came into light on Agust 10, 2014, where the tribal welfare and social justice departments disbursed a sum of Rs. 4.34 crore to 2,815 students from 63 colleges. surprisingly, all these 63 colleges are banned colleges of Nagpur University.

Rajnish Seth, Principal Secretary of Home Department, directed the medical and higher education department, tribal welfare and social justice department as well as drugs department to submit their reports on the action that is being taken on the interim reports that are submitted by the Special Task Force (STF). All these departments must submit their reports to CM as early as possible.

On December 1, 2016, Rajnish Seth sent a letter to all concerned departments stating that they have to submit the report by December 5, 2016. However, none of the officials from these departments have responded.

Commissioner of Police, Nagpur, Mr. Venkatesh who is also the Head of Special Task Force submitted two interim reports to the Home Ministry. Later, these reports were sent to concerned departments. The interim report submitted by STF stated that the “misappropriation of funds” and “serious irregularities” were found after the investigation and serious action must be taken against the concerned departments which are involved in the scam.
