The state government of Maharashtra has announced that it would reimburse 50% of fees to college students under Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj scholarship scheme. The scholarship scheme is exclusively applicable to the Maratha community, and the students whose family income is less than Rs. 8 lakh are eligible for reimbursement under this scheme.
The state government directed all the colleges not to charge full fees from the students who are eligible for 50% fee reimbursement under Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj scholarship scheme. If colleges violate the rules, the state government may take legal and disciplinary action. Therefore, all the colleges must adhere to the rules of the government.

Students eligible for Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj scholarship scheme can file a compliant if colleges demand full fees. Students can complain to Joint Director of Education or nodal officers appointed for this purpose.

Over the last few days, a section of people belonging to Maratha community have been demanding the state government to provide reservation in jobs and education under OBC quota. The decision to reimburse 50% fees was taken to end the protest.
Recently, the Union Cabinet has given its nod for the continuation of post matric, pre-matric and merit-based scholarships to the students belonging to minority communities in India. The cabinet has also earmarked Rs. 5,000 crore for this purpose until 2020. As per the scheme, the Union Cabinet will distribute around 70 lakh scholarships annually.
