MCI Approves Introduction of 116 PG Medical Seats in Kerala

Kerala has received approval by the Medical Council of India to convert some of the existing PG medical diploma seats into PG medical degree seats. As per a press release, 116 new PG medical degree seats have been introduced in various Kerala government and self-financing medical colleges.

New Kerala PG Medical Seats Approved

Indian Medical Institutions across different states have recently been approved for introducing PG medical seats, across different fields. In a recent update, the Medical Council of India (MCI) has approved Kerala State to covert its PG medical diploma seats to PG degree seats, stated a press release.

As per the press release, Kerala has been approved to introduce 116 PG medical degree seats in the different medical colleges of the state. Out of the total 116 approved seats, 109 seats have been approved in government medical colleges, while the rest 7 seats have been approved in self-financing colleges.

The new PG medical seats have been approved for four major government-run medical colleges are as follows:

With the addition of these 116 new PG medical seats under different PG medical colleges in Kerala, a total of 256 seats have been newly added to the state. The admissions to these new seats will be applicable from the next academic session, i.e. 2020-21.

The approval had been granted by the Medical Council of India on the recommendations forwarded by the Department of Medical Education and PG Experts’ Group. As per sources, MCI had taken into consideration the different infrastructural and academic facilities provided by the Kerala PG medical colleges and, thus, decided to convert PG Diploma seats to PG medical degree seats.

Along with the PG Medical Degree seats, the Thrissur Government Medical College was also approved to introduce two seats for Doctorate of Medicine (DM) in Cardiology, which is a super-speciality course, stated Health Minister KK Shylaja, while praising the current government’s positive steps towards the development of the health industry.
